ICAP credential

What is the ICAP credential, and how can I get it?

ICAP stands for International Certified Addiction Professional. It's an international professional credential for people working in substance use prevention, treatment and recovery support. It's awarded by the Center for Credentialing and Accreditation (CCA), which is part of ICUDDR. It shows that you've met international standards for training, supervised experience and knowledge.

  • ICAP-Treatment I–IV: four levels, from entry level (secondary school education) to advanced practice (a master's degree or higher)

Requirements depend on the credential and level. Every credential needs these four things:

  1. Education: from a secondary school diploma (Treatment I, Recovery Support) up to a master's degree (Treatment IV).
  2. Training hours: at least 100–120 contact hours in substance use subjects for entry-level credentials, rising to 500 for Treatment III and IV. This includes set hours in ethics and HIV/AIDS. For Prevention, the set hours are in ethics and physiology/pharmacology.

  1. Join ISSUP (it's free).
  2. Complete your training hours on ISSUP Academy, which will be automatically counted in your ICAP application.
  3. Record your training and work experience using ICUDDR's contact hours forms.
  4. Create an account and apply at portal.globalccc.org.
  5. Take the exam.

Check your application carefully before you submit it, because it can't be edited afterwards. If it's returned for missing documents, you have three days to upload them.
